RECESS PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

Recess Procedure Overview

Upon arrival at recess, students will be directed to line up along the designated perimeter for management and safety purposes. The Recess Coach will use established attention grabbers, such as, “If you can hear my voice, clap once,” to effectively gather students’ attention.

The Recess Coach will then:

1. Introduce the activity by clearly stating its name.

2. Engage students by asking, “What’s the name of the activity?” to ensure they are actively processing the information.

3. Explain the rules and boundaries of the activity to provide clear instructions and set expectations.

Inclusive Participation

No activity will involve a “loser” or elimination. If a student steps out of play, they can rejoin the activity after completing 10 jumping jacks, ensuring every student has the confidence to stay fully engaged throughout recess.

In addition to structured games, various activity stations will be available daily, offering students a range of options to explore.

Engagement and the 80/20 Method

We implement the 80/20 method, focusing primarily on the students who are actively engaged. For students who may be unengaged, we provide alternative ways to participate, such as:

Becoming the Recess Coach’s helper, or

Opting to join another activity station.

Conflict Resolution

In the event of a conflict, the resolution method will be “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” ensuring a quick and fair resolution process.
